We have all heard friends or training partners say at one point or another, "I have been training like a dog!" What do they mean by this? Dogs as we know or don't know enjoy being out and hitting the road or trail more than just about anything else. Most dogs are doing fifteen years to life in a maximum-security prison called their home. Yeah, sure maybe they get out in the backyard or maybe get to run "free" on a run cord. But come on who is kidding whom here. This is like spending time in the "yard". One of my best tips is to really train like a dog.

Take your dog for a run! It even gets better when you don't even have a dog. Find a relative or friend that has one that you could run. The dog will begin to see you as their running shoe wearing probation officer. There is nothing better than getting on your running shoes and to seeing a dog go wild. They know they are about to get plenty of sun loving vitamin D. This kind of training may seem a bit much for some but give it a try.

  • Do a dog run on one of your easy "fun" days. Running with a dog will force you to slow down and focus on something other than your heart rate, interval time, pace, etc. This will leave you fresher for the hard work that you will have to do.
  • Most dogs can run for thirty minutes without any trouble. This is of course at an easy pace.
  • The dog should be on a leash. I have also found that at most big pet stores you can even find a running leash. They hook to a belt so you can run hands free.
  • Make sure that there is a stream or water source near by for your fury partner. If this is a problem bring a fanny pack with a water bottle holder along and make sure your dog gets plenty of fluid. Usually some water every 15 minutes or so will suffice.
  • Make sure not to run when it is too hot. Most dogs don't do very well in high heat. It is best to beat the heat by running early or later in the day.
  • Running with a dog is also a great way to help beat the feelings of burnout. Not only is it fun for you and the dog but it will allow your body to recover in an active way.
  • I have also been amazed at how easy it is to meet people with a dog that is running. People say that you could have a candle light diner with. Ice breaker exrondare!
